SCWI: STABLE COSMIC WEB IMAGER
The SCWI team will observe the structure of the universe from a high-altitude balloon that will circumnavigate Antarctica for a multi-week mission to map the night sky. The balloon will carry STABLE, an instrument that captures the first UV observations of the Circumgalactic Medium and Intergalactic Medium through UV spectroscopy, revolutionizing understanding of galactic structure. These observations advance fundamental research in galaxy formation and baryonic structure and will play a role in shaping future space-based observatories.
This project brings together advanced expertise in integral field spectroscopy and balloon-borne astrophysics, and unique areas of research and technology in the Caltech and JPL community, building on a legacy of instrument innovation and leadership in astrophysics.
